May 7, 2012 – Natural skin care and acne treatments are always popular, but sometimes aren’t as effective as prescription medications. But what if there was a natural acne treatment that worked better than currently available over-the-counter products? The answer may come in thyme.

Thyme is an herb and you’ve probably heard of it before or seen it in the spice and condiment section of your local grocery store. But don’t rush out and buy the spice and apply it to your face. The thyme that produced a positive result in acne treatment was steeped in alcohol, according to a recent press release about a study done at Leeds Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom.

The study found that thyme steeped in alcohol was effective in fighting the bacteria that contributes to acne. In fact, thyme was actually better at fighting the bacteria than benzoyl peroxide, which is what is currently used in a lot of over-the-counter acne medications.

The good thing about thyme as opposed to benzoyl peroxide is that thyme is more gentle on the skin. It has an anti-inflammatory property to it and it doesn’t dry out or irritate the skin the way that benzoyl peroxide often does.

So should you try to cook up your own acne treatment using time and alcohol and incorporate it into your skin care routine? No. But it does mean that there are promising new natural alternatives being developed that could provide relief from acne in the near future.
