April 16, 2012 – The purpose of skin care products is to improve the tone and condition of your skin, right? Pretty simple. But did you know that there are actually some ingredients in skin care products that can irritate your skin and cause premature aging, acne breakouts, collagen and elastin damage, dryness or too much oil production? It’s true, and if you know which skin care product ingredients have the capability of causing irritation you can avoid them.
Knowing which skin care product ingredients may irritate your skin or strip off too much of the natural oils is important because you may not always get a rash or feel a burning, stinging sensation to indicate something is wrong. The irritation can occur under the first layer of skin, with collagen breakdown or cell damage. It may take weeks or months before you see the damage and then wonder what caused it. That’s why you need to carefully read the labels on any new product you try and only try it on a limited area at first even if there are no potentially irritating ingredients.
Some of the skin care products that can cause skin irritation include some forms of alcohol, camphor, cinnamon, citrus oils and juice, clove, eucalyptus, grapefruit, lavendar, linalool, menthol, menthyl lactate, mints, wintergreen, witch hazel and ylang-ylang.
Look for these ingredients in your current skin care products. If you’ve been using them for some time and haven’t had any problems, they most likely aren’t an irritant to your skin. If you’ve purchased a new product and haven’t tried it yet, be aware that they may have an adverse effect on your skin.
